Hyundai and Kia Oil Consumption Recalls, Lawsuits & Ownership Rights Explained

Hyundai Oil Consumption Recall

In recent years, Hyundai has issued recalls for excessive oil consumption affecting over 2 million vehicles. The recalls centered around Theta II gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines installed in various Hyundai models from 2011-2014, including the Sonata, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Veloster, and Kia Optima.

The oil consumption defect caused engines to burn through excessive amounts of motor oil in between scheduled oil changes. As part of the recall, Hyundai dealerships inspect the engines and make repairs which can include engine replacements. Hyundai also extended the powertrain warranties on affected models to 10 years/120,000 miles to cover related repairs.

Kia Oil Consumption Recall

Similarly, Kia Motors issued recalls in 2020 for excessive oil consumption issues impacting around 1.4 million vehicles equipped with the Theta II engines from the 2011-2014 model years. This Kia oil consumption recall includes the Optima, Sorento, and Sportage models.

Dealerships are tasked with inspecting and repairing the engines as needed, free of charge to owners under Kia’s recall programs. The warranties on the affected Kia models have also been extended to 10 years/120,000 miles.

Hyundai Oil Consumption Lawsuit

A class action lawsuit was filed against Hyundai in 2019 based on the oil consumption defect and the resulting damage to affected vehicles. The Hyundai oil consumption lawsuit alleges that the automaker knowingly concealed the problem from consumers.

In early 2023, Hyundai reached a preliminary $54 million USD settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit. The settlement is still awaiting final approval but would compensate owners and lessees for out-of-pocket repair costs related to excessive oil consumption.

Kia Oil Consumption Class Action Lawsuit

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against Kia to seek compensation for owners of 2011-2014 Optima, Sorento and Sportage models affected by the Theta II oil consumption defect. The Kia oil consumption lawsuit claims Kia was aware of the problem since 2011 but hid it from consumers.

The lawsuit against Kia is still underway as plaintiffs seek extended warranties, reimbursements for repair costs, and punitive damages for Kia’s alleged concealment of the engine defect. The outcome is pending.

Hyundai Class Action Lawsuit Oil Consumption

The recently settled class action lawsuit against Hyundai has broader implications beyond just reimbursements for the roughly 830,000 owners represented. The settlement brings even more publicity to the oil consumption problem plaguing many 2011-2014 Hyundai models.

While Hyundai maintains the defects only pose maintenance issues when oil changes are missed, the lawsuit alleges the excessive oil consumption can lead to complete engine failure and safety hazards – allegations Hyundai settled to avoid further litigation. The final approval of the settlement terms is still pending.

Hyundai Policy on Oil Consumption

According to Hyundai’s vehicle owner manuals, it considers oil consumption of up to 1 quart per 1,200 miles to be normal. The manuals state adjustments will only be made if consumption exceeds those guidelines with dealer inspection finding mechanical issues.

However, Hyundai’s recent recalls and extended engine warranties on affected 2011-2014 models demonstrate the brand is taking steps to address owner complaints regarding excessive oil consumption beyond published policies.

Kia Soul Oil Consumption Recall

The Kia Soul has also been impacted by Kia’s widespread recalls for excessive oil consumption in the 2011-2014 model years equipped with the Theta II GDI engines. As part of the recall, Soul owners can take their vehicles to Kia dealers to have the pistons and related components inspected and repaired as necessary to address oil consumption issues.

The Kia Soul recall also extends the Knock Sensor Detection System warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles as engine damage can occur related to the oil consumption defect. Visit Kia’s product recall page for the most up-to-date information.
